Milis Linux 2.3 Stable June Release Announcement
Following six months of dedicated development, we are proud to announce the release of our new stable version, dated 2026-06-15. During this period, we have focused on enhancing the desktop ecosystem while preserving the core system architecture. Our desktop structure has reached a unique level of maturity, offering support for various window managers. Furthermore, we have strengthened our community outreach, leading to increased contributions to our applications and package repository. This release, aimed at providing the ultimate end-user experience, includes the following key improvements:
Renewing the Ecosystem Vision
- Following extensive R&D and update cycles, our new stable image, dated 2026-06-15, is now available for general use.
- This stable release marks a significant milestone in Milis Linux’s mission to build an independent desktop ecosystem and deliver a premier end-user experience.
- Our distribution has evolved beyond a standard Linux OS, reinforcing an independent ecosystem structure that thrives on community participation.
- The transition to an independent desktop structure has been successfully matured, incorporating new applications with unique approaches into the core system architecture.
Transition to a Unique Desktop Environment
- mdesktop, our custom-designed C/GTK3-based desktop environment, is now the default desktop application in this release.
- The system comes fully integrated with a custom panel (taskbar) and native desktop components.
- Through this integrated structure, system resource utilization has been optimized, resulting in a highly agile desktop environment.
- New dynamic panels and desktop widgets have been introduced to streamline the daily user experience.
- Advanced wallpaper management and intuitive drag-and-drop file handling have been finalized.
- Full compatibility with modern Wayland window managers has been achieved, alongside a flexible management interface for dynamic plugin control, supported by our inventive desktop framework.
Streamlined Configuration Management
- A new settings editor application has been developed to allow users to manage system tweaks with ease.
- This module, designed to support the desktop settings system, enables the graphical editing of any INI-formatted configuration file within the system.
- The System Settings Center has been optimized, modularizing controls for date/time, screen brightness, and more.
Expansion of the Package Distribution Infrastructure
- To increase package diversity, the Milis User Repository (MKD) has been reactivated.
- Thanks to our simplified package preparation methodology, numerous new packages have been added to the ecosystem in a very short time.
- A new graphical store interface, milis-magaza, has been launched to simplify application management for end-users.
- To provide application support for the official repository, mappimage was developed to manage AppImage-format packages and has been integrated into the store application.
Updated Application Interfaces
- MPS-UI, the graphical interface for the Milis Package System, has been refactored into a modular standalone script.
- The application's responsiveness has been improved, and integration with the mdesktop panel now allows for real-time tracking of package updates and one-click activation of community repositories.
- Multi-language support has been added to the system login manager, enhancing internationalization and localization capabilities.
- The dinit service manager has been updated to ensure the desktop environment starts asynchronously, quickly, and reliably.
- The Milis Linux installer has been completely overhauled, reducing the installation process to minimal steps and providing a faster, more practical interface.
Performance and Security Enhancements
- Milis applications updated via the repository have been converted into modular, standalone scripts, accelerating the update process.
- To maintain the highest level of system security, known vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel and other critical security gaps have been patched.
- Our official and community repositories have reached nearly 1,000 packages, covering the software and components required for daily use.
- Modern library toolsets that meet the requirements for isolated developer workspaces are now available with a single command.
